John Lewis & Partners/Waitrose & Partners: ‘Excitable Edgar’
Tipped as the best Christmas advert of 2019, John Lewis teamed up with Waitrose & Partners, to tell the tale of a young girl, called Ava, who strikes up a friendship with Edgar the Dragon.
The advert shows Ava and Edgar participating in seasonal activities however Edgar is unable to contain his excitement and starts to breathe fire at the worst possible moments resulting with him melting a freshly built snowman and an ice-rink, as well as setting fire to the local town’s Christmas tree and decorations. Embarrassed from his actions, Edgar shuts himself away until Ava presents him with the perfect Christmas gift to cheer him up - a Christmas Pudding! Allowing Edgar to use his flame breathing to light the pudding during Christmas dinner. The little girl who plays Ava is also from the same city as Digitonic, Glasgow!
Walkers & Mariah Carey: All I Want For Christmas. Too Good To Share.
Following in the footsteps of the Spice Girls who were the face of Walkers’ previous campaign in the summer, Mariah Carey is the star of the show in this year’s Christmas advert. The advert opens with Mariah filming a music video for ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ where they then pause for a break from shooting. Mariah then demonstrates why she is not only the queen of Christmas but the queen of pop too and hits the high note in order to convince a Christmas Elf to give her the last remaining packet of Pigs in Blankets flavoured Walkers crisps - a limited edition festive flavour!
Mariah is also pictured on the packets of Walkers crisps throughout the festive season in order to promote the ‘All I Want For Christmas’ competition where avid crisp eaters can enter to win various prizes. Although Mariah Carey was reported to be paid £9m for the ad campaign, it also ties in nicely with the 25th anniversary of her 1994 Merry Christmas album which included the ultimate Christmas song ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.
Haford Hardware: #BeAKidThisChristmas
Costing just £100, a local hardware store in Wales created an adorable Christmas advert starring Arthur who is only 2 years old.
This little advert, which follows Arthur working a typical ‘shift’ at the hardware store, created a big impact and went viral. Since being uploaded to YouTube on 1st December, it’s already recorded over 2.5million views (the population of Wales is only 3.1million!).
The theme of the advert is to encourage people to be a kid at Christmas but the real message is to shop local and support independent businesses.
Sky: Reconnect This Christmas
37 years after the iconic film, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was released, both E.T. and original cast member Henry Thomas, who played Elliot, feature in Sky’s magical Christmas ad which was made in collaboration with Universal Pictures.
The advert is set at Elliot’s family home 37 years later, where E.T. is found searching in the garden for his old friend by Elliot’s 2 small children, Elliot then comes out to greet E.T. and introduces him to his children and wife.
Technology has dramatically evolved since E.T visited Elliot previously in 1982, therefore he learns about the internet, watches a film via Sky’s On-demand streaming service and also plays with a VR headset while also spending quality time with Elliot and his family on the lead up to Christmas.
The core message of the advert is to ‘Reconnect This Christmas’ and Sky are keen to make it simple for family and friends to call and message during the Christmas holidays by offering their customers special deals on Christmas Day, allowing them to easily connect with loved ones who live further away.
Although all 4 of these adverts have different meanings and messages, they still all pull on your heartstrings and provoke emotions as well as being quite nostalgic!
